Stratfield Turgis & Hartley Wespall Cricket Club Lost by 45 runs
Match report
The team arrived at Emmbrook and Bearwood in good spirits as the weather was fine, although muggy. There were a few new players to the 1st team including Sam Lakhani and Rob Cooper, while we also welcomed back Matthew Sandland as well.
Instructions from the skipper were to bowl good line and length and put them under pressure – sadly, this was not to the case for quite a few deliveries. Nathan Field was able to back up being spanked to the boundary second ball of his over from Phipps with a good ball that hit the middle wicket. When the score got to 17 Clay slowed one up and Woodward played too early and was bowled. A further 48 runs were ably added, in part due to some lusty hitting, in part due to wayward bowling, before indecision resulted in a return over the sticks from Mark Walton to run out the batsman.
There ensued a bit of a blip from E&B as Clay struck again through a juggling catch in gully from Martin Sandland and Clarke took McNeily (bowled), Boddington was LBW Clarke for 6 and Gibbs (who had just scored his 50) was run out by Clay after some fancy footwork.
Strafield felt they had the winning of the game in their sights, but took their foot off the throat of E&B, in part again to wayward bowling, but also due to some sensible batting – especially from Sabir. The 45 run partnership was finally broken with some really good bowling from Cooper when he bowled Trill. Field popped up again bowling Viroja for 6, before Clay polished off the innings by removing Sabir (bowled) for 30.
Stratifeld needed a good start in the batting, but this was far from the case in a devastating opening spell from E&B. Firstly, Martin Sandland was taken brilliantly by Tom (last name sadly not remembered by this writer) in the gully area, off the bowling of Patterson. At this level it was a hell of a way to go and he can count himself unlucky as not many players will be pulling off that sort of catch week in week out. Two further cracking deliveries then got rid of Clarke (yorked and bowled by Phipps) and Walton (yorked and bowled by Phipps). Another attempted yorker by Patterson had Headford playing a straight forward catch back to the bowler and Stratfield were in dire straits at 4-11.
A period of rebuilding by Gillham and Spence then took place – involving test cricket-esque batting, basically trying to leave anything that didn’t need to be played. The tactic worked somewhat, but took it’s time. Stratfield advanced to 14 off 13 overs before the run rate started to progress somewhat. A 48 run partnership had Stratfield on 40 after 20 overs and progressing at a better rate before Gillham was caught Gibbs bowled Trill. Sam Lakhani was then bowled by a lovely delivery from Trill to beat the edge but still take the off-peg, in the same over to again leave Stratfield tettering.
Spence and Clay then managed 60 runs to advance the score to 115 off of 35 overs and leaving Stratifeld with a sniff of victory. However, E&B struck back by removing Spence (LBW for 37), then the next over Clay (another very good catch by ‘Tom’ off of Patterson for 22). The youth of the team were then let loose with the bat, however a bad judgement on a second run after a lovely push through the covers saw Cooper run out for one, before Matthew Sandland was given out caught behind off of Patterson again for 0.
Extra’s were the second highest score for Stratfield with 33!!
Phipps – 10-5-20-3, Patterson – 9.4-4-23-4, Trill – 7-1-13-2
