Inaugural Season of Berks Mercury Cricket League with a maximum of ninety overs per match
The side batting first had an optional maximum of 47 overs. No limit was imposed on the number overs to be bowled by individual bowlers
The First X1 began life in the Premier Division on the 6th May with an away fixture against Woodley. The league was made up from ten clubs (Associated Biscuits/Windsor and Eton/Wargrave/Hurst/ Kidmore End/White Waltham/Sonning/Mapledurham/ST/Woodley. The Seconds (in North Hants Division 2) were away to Basingstoke and NH 1V

Continuing progress and cooperation with TSGCC had been noted
The First X1 finished 8/10 in Premier Division of the Berkshire League, but avoided relegation. Stephen Dyer topped batting averages with 523 runs and an average of 26.15. Steve Critchell headed the bowling figures with 43 wickets for 13.32 apiece
Steve Dyer was voted Berks Mercury League young player of the Year
2nd X1 had marked its last season in Hants League with some success. The seconds were entered into Division 3 of the Berkshire League for next season. D Fletcher headed up the second’s batting with 127 runs at 25.60 and Terry Pearson bagged 30 wickets at 13.16

A tour of Yorkshire (four matches) in 1980 was proposed by G Hullett
The newly installed bar had proved a considerable success and Roger Gill was complimented on his building work. The bar licence was granted on 28th March 1979 and was valid initially for one year. The official opening on 25th May was attended by over 70 people
The agreement with TSGCC was being terminated on 31st December 1979 and a revised agreement negotiated for one year to 31st December 1980
Our security of tenure on the ground was recognised as being a most important forthcoming
task for the Club to confirm
A gang mower had been acquired as part of continuing ground improvements.
Geoff Dyer was re-elected to the committee of the Berkshire League.
Graham Last was the first winner of the Bob Skinner Trophy. (Young Player of the Year).
On the playing side the First X1 again had a ‘nervous’ season – finishing again eight of 10 teams.
New players Graham Hullett and Stuart Clarkson had done particularly well.
Geoff Dyer topped the batting with 300 runs at 21.86, while J Hall took 14 wickets at 6.21.
The Second X1 included many youngsters and had an encouraging first season in Division 3 of the Berkshire League -finishing halfway. Terry Pearson bowled 170 overs for 360 runs (28 wickets At 12.41) In the Berkshire Indoor League we had more success - winning our division and reaching the pool semi-finals

Parish Meeting Cricket Club:
The chairman, Mr Price, reported that he had attended 2 committee meetings of the club, which is now expanding with hopes of running 2 teams. The club has applied for a licence to sell beer and spirits. Mr and Mrs Kirke (landlords of the ‘Cricketers’) opposed. A lengthy discussion ensued. Mr Gaiger read a letter he had written to the Licensing Committee of the Magistrates saying that several parishioners were against the granting of the licence
(12th December) Mr Kirke had tabled a motion on ’The misuse of the Recreation Ground together with the aggravation of discos’ After much discussion Mr R Syckelmore proposed the following: ‘that the meeting was satisfied with the way that the Recreation Ground is presently administered by the Parish Meeting and the Cricket Club and that it should continue in this manner for the foreseeable future’. A vote was taken and a large majority was found in favour of the motion

An Extraordinary General Meeting (19 April) was held with J Pollock taking the chair in Pavilion - primarily to amend Rule 3 to read:

The 2nd X1 finished 8th in Division 3. Teams had often included colts
Alan Longden topped batting figures with 183 runs at 22.88. Terry Pearson sent down 242 overs taking 42 wickets at 11.24, including a memorable (league record) haul of 10 – 9 v Bradfield

One of our playing members, Stuart Clarkson, was sadly killed in a skiing accident in Italy

A continuing programme of pavilion improvement was maintained and a new heavy duty motor mower had been purchased.
Derek Morgan had sadly died during the early summer.
Two dances and a barbecue were held, while the bar continued to flourish.
Annual subscriptions remained unchanged at £5.
The inaugural McDonald Trophy was presented by Mrs McDonald and Margaret Strudley to the Club. It was to be awarded to be ‘Clubman of the Year’. The first award was made to Anne and Terry Pearson.
The Bob Skinner Trophy (Young Player of the Year) went to Adrian Sandland.
The playing records for the two Saturday sides had been disappointing. The First X1 finished at the foot of Division 1 and was duly relegated. Steve Dyer hit 415 league runs at an average of 34.58.
Steve Dyer was selected for League’s Under-25 team v Lancashire and scored 62.
The Seconds completed a poor playing season by finishing at the foot of Division 3 and were also relegated – to Division 4.
The Sunday X1 under the captaincy of Richard Weavers was able to confirm a successful season, with good performances by Steve Dyer with the bat.
Parish Meeting (31st March) Mr Pollock reported that the Cricket Club had been granted a licence to sell beer and spirits for 10 years with no opposition. There would be Saturday and Sunday cricket and their finances were reasonable.
Ian Botham’s 149 no at Headingley coined the title ‘Botham’s Ashes’.
Underarm bowling by Australia v New Zealand in a one-day international at Melbourne prevented NZ scoring a winning six off final ball, and forced a rule change.

A heavy duty mower had been purchased and the idea of a permanent practice wicket was approved in principle.
It was calculated that over 4500 pints of beer had been consumed over the year in the club’s bar.
Match fees were set at £1.20.
A ‘German’ evening was held at the club, with a well-known wine expert giving talk.
A moderate season for both First and Second Elevens. The ‘firsts’ ended three from bottom in Division 1. Albert Potter headed the batting for the 1st X1 with 473 runs at 29.56. Albert Tinson topped the bowling with 16 wickets at 14.88. Terry Pearson bowled a monumental 350 overs, taking 52 wickets at 18.04 apiece.
The second X1 ended bottom of the pile in Division 4. Richard Hoddinott with 210 runs at 23.33 and R Small with 19 wickets at 18.63 headed the averages.
The Sunday side had a poor season. Albert Potter with 304 runs at 38.00 and Richard Weavers with 513 runs at 32.00 headed up the batting. Albert Potter and Brian Sandland topped the bowling figures.
The Colts X1 batting was led by Jon Richardson (299 runs at 33.22) with Geoff Paterson heading the bowling tables - with his 20 wickets costing 6.85 apiece.
The club played a friendly against Aldershot FC in August.
Bob Skinner Trophy was awarded to Jon Richardson.
Colt of the Year Trophy provided by Jim Weavers went to Geoff Paterson.

Rabbits (of the non-cricketer variety) were reported as being exceptionally damaging to the playing surface.
The First X1 finished bottom of Division 1 and were duly relegated. (Later to be reinstated into Division 1). The Second eleven would be placed in a reorganised Division 2 (Reserve Section).
Brian Sandland topped the First X1 batting and Roger Tinson headed up the bowling figures.
For the Seconds, Anand Seegobin averaged 25.85 from 8 innings and Mike McLenning took 17 wickets at an average of 13.58 apiece.
Richard Weavers starred for the Sunday side, with 500 runs at 45.4, while the bowling figures were headed by Brian Sandland with 25 wickets at 13.8 apiece.
Parish Meeting The Chairman reported the cricket club to be in a good financial state but that there was a shortage of local cricketers, although the colts team had many local boys. The ground was in good condition and the pavilion had been re-decorated
The Third World Cricket Cup held in England saw India beat West Indies in the final by 43 runs.
Gordon Greenige retired overnight in West Indies v India Test to attend his sick daughter.

The meeting heard the Jim Pollock had died and decided to make an appropriate presentation to Mrs Jo Pollock in recognition of Jim’s service to the Club

The First X1 was relegated to Division 2, with Eddie Newman topping the batting averages with 432 runs at an average of 33.2. First X1 bowling records were topped by Terry Pearson with 25 wickets at 16.6 apiece and Brian Sandland with 27 wickets at 20.1 apiece. John Atkinson starred in the Seconds with 244 runs at 48.8, while bowling honours went to Albert Tinson (16 wickets at 10.1 apiece). The Seconds finished the season fourth in Division 2 (reserve section)
In August, John Atkinson and Albert Tinson shared an unbroken partnership of 174 for the third wicket v Theale. (John Atkinson 109 no)
The Sunday X1 batting was topped by David Kirkbride with 201 runs at 28.70. Leading the bowling was David Taylor with 15 wickets at 12.10. Martin Sandland was absent from the side due to a broken arm
The Colts batting was led by Jon Richardson with132 runs at 16.50. Geoff Paterson topped the bowling in this section (11 wickets at 8.7 apiece.)
A cricketing challenge to Stratfield ladies was received from Sonning CC ladies. Two matches were held – one on each respective ground
A new sponsor for the Berkshire League (Touche Ross) was installed
Parish Meeting The (retiring) Chairman reported that he had also had to resign as chairman of the cricket club and he did not know who the new chairman was. The Cricket Club had asked permission to hold their annual BarBQ and dance on the Recreation Ground on July 13. This was agreed.

Another mediocre season for the First X1 which saw them relegated to division 3. John Atkinson led the batting figures (303 runs at 25.3). Mike McLenning took 27 wickets at 12.9 apiece and Brian Sandland sent down 236 overs, taking 32 wickets at 24.3
The Seconds finished third from the foot of the table - batting was topped by Geoff Paterson with 155 runs at 22.14, and the same player headed the bowling figures with 16 wickets at 10.3 apiece
The Sunday X1 batted more consistently, with John Atkinson averaging 49.3. Steve Clarke was top bowler - taking 18 wickets at 17.0 apiece
A fish and chips supper was held (£1.31 for cod and chips and £1.47 for chicken and chips – (delivered !)
The McDonald Trophy was awarded to Roger Gill and the Bob Skinner Trophy to Steve Clarke. Colt of the Year was Stephen Poulter

It was decided that improving the clubhouse represented a better proposition than moving its location. Extensive consultation took place with the Basingstoke & Deane Borough council and Parish Meeting.

A more successful playing record this year. The First X1 finished runners-up to Compton in Division 3 and were promoted into Division 2. Richard Weavers headed the league batting with 459 runs at 45.90, ably supported by John Atkinson (32.00) and Adrian Sandland (30.71)
Richard Weavers completed a ‘double’ by topping the league bowling with 26 wickets at 11.08 apiece
The Second X1, competing in Division 2 of the Second X1 Competition, finished a creditable third in the table, with the batting best being Anand Seegobin (161 runs at 23.00). Best bowling figures
were recorded by Terry Pearson with 22 wickets at 9.36 apiece
The Sunday X1 batting was headed by Richard Harrison (442 runs at 44.2) and bowling best was Brian Sandland with 17 wickets at 13.6 apiece)
For the Colts X1, George Troughton headed the batting (18.00) and the bowling best was S Atkins (8 wickets at 4.9)

For the Colts, Jason Dance topped both batting and bowling performances
The meeting was informed that our Club President was very ill
Parish Meeting (12th May) It appeared that when the Recreation Ground was registered as a village green it was put in the ownership of the Borough Council, probably because we are not large enough to be a parish council. Roy Strudley was voted Clubman of the Year and was awarded the McDonald Trophy
Craig Strudley received the Bob Skinner Trophy.
In the Lafford and Leavey Berkshire League the First X1 finished fourth although severely affected by injuries. Richard Weavers again dominated the batting with 526 runs at 65.76, ably supported by new man, Andy Headford (282 at 31.33 including a century v Mortimer West End)
Richard Harrison (24 wickets at 20.50) and Roger Tinson (19 wickets at 14.89) were the bowling mainstays
The Seconds experienced a dismal season, finishing bottom of Division 2 of the Reserve Section
Several experienced players had left the club. Jon Richardson stood out in the batting figures (442 runs at 32.00). Heading the bowling was Geoff Paterson with 27 wickets costing 13.78 apiece
Parish Meeting (13th May) The Chairman reported that she and the secretary had spent many months negotiating the terms of the head lease of the Recreation Ground with the Borough Council and even longer on the terms of the sub-lease of the pavilion to the cricket club. Finally on 3rd May 1988 both leases were signed and the 20,000 grant released to the club. Work has now started on the pavilion. The cricket club has a lease on the pavilion for 21 years with a ten year break clause. A licence to play cricket on the village green has been granted to the Cricket Club and this is separate from the underlease which only refers to the pavilion. The village green therefore remains common land although the cricket field cannot be used for any other purposes while a match is in progress or necessary groundkeeping activities are going on. We do hope that people will always respect the wicket

Jim Berry and Mick Turvey accepted an invitation to attend the Berkshire Umpires Association’s training courses in February next.
A severe drainage problem was reported and would be treated as a priority matter.
It was agreed to enter the Guy Jewell Trophy administered by Basingstoke CC.
The Farley Hill six-a-side competition would also be entered
Martin Turvey’s offer to donate a trophy in memory of his grandfather, Arthur Turvey was gratefully accepted by the meeting.

On the playing side, the First X1 had a disappointing season, finishing second from bottom in the League, winning only twice.
The Seconds had an improved season finishing fourth. Jon Richardson again topped the batting with 309 runs at an average of 30.9 and shared a 110 opening partnership with Grant Strudley v West Ilsley. Craig Strudley (46 wickets at 10.3) was bowler of the season.
In June, the Seconds set up a record divisional score of 278-7 v Compton
The Sunday side had an enjoyable season with Jon Richardson posting his maiden century with the club.
PM 26th June Mrs MacDonald congratulated the Cricket club on the vastly improved state of the pavilion

A relatively successful season on the pitch - with the First X1 finishing a very close third to Pinkneys Green and Cippenham in Division 2 of the Touche Ross Berkshire League and the Seconds achieving fourth place in Second division of the Second X1 competition
For the Firsts Richard Weavers topped the Division 2 averages with 55.17 (9 innings), Andy Headford notched a total of 600 runs from 17 innings. Eddie Newman and Ian Osbourne weighed in with averages of 33.33 and 27.50 respectively. Steve Ayers with 43 wickets at 13.42 and Tim Waite (27 at 12.78) kept our opponents walking back at regular intervals. For the Seconds who finished fourth in division 2 of the Second X1 competition, Craig Strudley returned 29 wickets at 11.24
The Sunday X1 had used 33 players of varying standards, but had enjoyed a successful season. Adrian Sandland had scored a maiden century versus Old Basing, while Chris Mison had taken a career best of 7-25 against neighbours Sherfield. Top batting honours went to Steve Clarke with 404 runs and 25 wickets
Rebel tour of South Africa led by Mike Gatting roundly condemned throughout the cricket world.

The First X1 ended the season in 4th place, Richard Weavers winning the divisional batting award. His overall season’s figures were 762 runs at an average of 84.66. Steve Ayers led the wicket takers with 47 at 13.21 apiece, closely followed by Tim Waite (43 at 19.23).
The Seconds won Division 2 of the Reserve Section and were promoted. Jon Richardson won Player of the Year scoring 523 runs at 52.3. Bowling was led by Dave Syckelmoore with 23 wickets at 8.2 apiece.(Winning a Divisional league award)
The Sunday XI had a mixed season. Andy Headford had batted well with good support from Joel Hanson

The first X1 finished a disappointing 8 of 10 sides in Division 2. Richard Weavers with 240 runs at 24 average headed the club’s league batting. The two Steves - Ayers and Clarke managed 32
and 22 wickets at 15.09 and 15.50 respectively
In Division 1 of the Second X1 Competition, the Seconds mirrored the First X1 finish
Joel Hanson hit 313 runs (31.30) and Chris Mison bowled his left armers for 117.1 overs and took 24 wickets (11.17). Sean Toman gave valuable support with 20 wickets (15.60)
Bob Skinner Trophy was awarded to Bill Lee
1992 was a dismal year for cricketing weather. Gale force winds and rain meant damp wickets
and slow outfields. Sawdust used probably proved the end for large areas of rainforest.
The Veekay cricket ball was used by the League for a second season, maintaining its shape and hardness very well
In the Benson and Hedges world cricket cup final Pakistan beat England by 22 runs at Melbourne
