Match report The Woodley batsman found it hard to score quickly against Stratfield Turgis 1st XI with the bowling being tight from the very first over. After an early wicket Richard Stanley & Iain Jubb accumulated a useful stand of over 50 but never managed to dominate the accuracy of Steve Ayers or Daniel Spence. However, it was only with the introduction of left arm over Chris Mison that wickets began to tumble. Happily this coincided with Spence finding his ‘catching hands’ holding on to 3 fine catches in the deep. Mison bowled his 15 overs in a single spell, rolling in from the Cricketer’s end with a combination of guile and late movement to capture 6 for 56. The final wicket of the innings fell in the 45th over with Woodley totalling just 157 runs. Unusually there were three potential hat-trick opportunities, but none were taken.

Stratfield’s reply relied heavily on skipper Steve Clarke, ably supported by debutant Martin Pask with a 68 run stand for the 3rd wicket, with Clarke eventually falling for 62. Stratfield seemed handily placed at 110 for 2 and were well ahead of the over rate. However, the introduction of Jawaad Raja (3 for 29) saw the middle order collapse as Stratfield slumped to 126 for 7 in what was seen as a ‘must win’ game to continue the revival of fortunes for the Hampshire club.

Matt Payne and Steve Ayers then applied their considerable years of experience to stop the rot. After four or five tentative overs of mainly survival they then plundered 24 runs from two overs of spin with Ayers straight driving another four to take them to victory by 3 wickets
